Jillian Gates

multimedia artist

Biography

Born 1966, Gosford, Australia
Lives and works on the Central Coast, NSW, Australia

Gates work is informed by social relationships between the body and architecture, whether it be how patients respond to hospital environments which underpinned her exhibition “Pain, Anxiety and Boredom” in the dungeons of the Sydney College of the Arts in 2009, to her most recent exhibition “Corporate Cells” held at the Lock Up Cultural Centre in Newcastle.

Gates personal experience is heavily intertwined with the philosophy of Michel Foucault, and other artists questioning power structures in relation to the body. The influences of Bruce Nauman, Bill Viola and Susan Norrie guide Gates through the history of installation art and digital media to generate her own interpretation of issues in conjunction with twenty- first century technology
